WestScriptTerms

Terms

Last updated:

These terms describe how WestScript works for readers, people who reply and writers, and what we expect in return. By using the site you agree to them. We have tried to keep them short and plain.

Words we use

  • WestScript, we, us: the team that runs this site.
  • You: anyone using the site, whether you read, reply or write.
  • Content: anything published on the site, including posts, code, images, profiles and replies.

Reading

Reading is free and needs no account. You may read, share links to posts and quote short passages with credit to the writer, as is normal on the web. Republishing a whole post elsewhere needs the writer’s permission. Some code samples come with their own licence; where one is stated, it applies.

Replying

You only need a name to reply. Every guest reply is reviewed, and we decide whether to publish it. You are responsible for what you write and must have the right to share anything you include.

Writing

Writer accounts are by invitation only; there is no public sign-up. An invitation lets you run a blog on WestScript under these terms. Keep your sign-in details private, and tell us through the contact page if you think someone else has used your account.

You are responsible for everything on your blog, including having the rights to the text, code and images you upload, and for following the community guidelines.

Ownership and permission

Writers keep ownership of what they publish. By publishing on WestScript, you give us permission to host, store, display and distribute your content as part of running the service: on your profile, on tag pages and in RSS feeds. This permission exists only so the site can work, and it ends when the content is removed. Copies that have already left the site, such as items already delivered to someone’s feed reader, are outside our control.

You can ask through the contact page for a single post or your whole blog to be removed at any time.

Community guidelines

The community guidelines are part of these terms. In short: nothing illegal, deceptive or harmful; no malware or phishing; no harassment; no impersonation; no copying other people’s work.

Misuse of the service

Do not try to break the site, overload it or get around its protections. That includes flooding the reply or contact forms, probing for security holes and scraping so heavily that the site slows down for others. Normal RSS polling and search engine crawling are fine.

Moderation

We may remove content, or decline to publish it, when it breaks these terms or the guidelines, or when we receive a valid complaint about it. Serious or repeated problems can lead to a blog being closed. We try to be fair and proportionate, but we are not obliged to host any particular content.

If your work appears here without permission, use the contact page, choose Copyright notice, and link your original and the copy.

Code in posts

Posts contain code, commands and configuration written by individual writers to share what they learned. Read and understand anything before you run it, try it somewhere safe first and keep backups. Running code from a post is your decision, and so are its consequences.

Posts link to other websites. We do not run those sites and are not responsible for their content or whether they stay available.

The service is provided as is

WestScript is provided “as is” and “as available”. We work to keep it online and its content intact, but we do not promise that it will run without interruption or errors, or that it will suit a particular purpose. We may change, pause or discontinue any feature, or the whole service, at any time. Keep your own copy of anything you would not want to lose.

Limits of our liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential losses, or for lost data, profits or opportunities, arising from your use of the site or from content published by others. Writers are responsible for their posts and people who reply for their replies; hosting something does not mean we endorse it.

Leaving

Readers can stop using the site whenever they like. Writers can ask, through the contact page, for their blog to be closed, after which the profile and posts are removed. We may withdraw an invitation if a blog seriously breaks these terms.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms as the service changes. When we do, the “last updated” date at the top of this page changes. Continuing to use the site after an update means you accept the new version.
